Why Build Perspectives?
With Tim Seims & Carolina Albano,
Why start the Build Perspectives podcast? Tim and Carolina talk about how they got started in the industry and why they started the podcast.
More About the Show
The Build Perspectives podcast shares insider knowledge to build connections and community in the facade and cladding industry. Tim and Carolina are friends, colleagues and former coworkers who love facades and their clients, and want to share their passion and insights to attract future talent to the building industry.
In this episode, Tim and Carolina talk about their backgrounds and how they got started in the facade industry.
The Origin of Carolina
Carolina has a few engineering degrees that she uses in her job every day. She’s been lucky enough to be able to travel all over the U.S. and Canada for her job, interacting with trades that have specific needs based on where they are practicing, such as TDI zones in Texas or places in Tornado Alley or seismic zones in California.
Throughout her career, she’s gotten to speak to installers, general contractors, architects and designers during meetings and site visits, giving her a great view on how all the different trades and positions work together.
The Origin of Tim
Tim got into construction right out of high school, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle. He started off doing relief work after hurricanes, opening his eyes to the need for more durable housing and house for displaced people.
During this time, he did every phase of construction: dirt work, concrete walls, flatwork, architectural concrete, roofing, siding, finished carpentry, cabinet, countertops and more. This background with actually doing the construction work gives him a unique perspective now that he works for a manufacturer, so when he talks to and visits with contractors, he can relate to their viewpoint and struggles with first-hand knowledge. Tim then went to the University of Phoenix and got his degree in his 30s.
His unique career path, from construction to college to sales, gives him a different perspective on everything from trades to training to selling.
For Love of the Art
One thing both Tim and Carolina point out is that architects and designers don’t do it for the money—they do it for love. They do it for the love of the art and to leave their mark in the world. They see beauty where others don’t and then work hard to create and share that beauty. It’s inspiring and both Tim and Carolina find it rewarding to help architects bring their vision to life.
And that’s how Build Perspectives got started: for love of facades and cladding. Tim and Carolina wanted to work together to create a good resource for the industry, something that is entertaining and interesting that lets them connect trades and manufacturers through their unique perspectives.
Every person on a job, from the general contractor to the carpenter to the installer to the architect to the manufacturer, is in this job because they love what they do. They love to create something that wasn’t there before, to push the envelope, to be able to drive down the street and say, “I helped build that.”
